It has been a little while since I have made a blog post about the Long Island Serial Killer. While some new information has come in over the last few weeks, it has left police with more questions then answers. Here is a general wrap-up of the case.
In May 2010, 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert went missing on Long Island. She had a connection to prostitution, and she was last seen going to meet someone off Craigslist. For months, police searched for Shannan Gilbert but did not find anything until December 2010.
In December 2010, police found the bodies of 4 women. They were identified as Maureen Brainard-Barne, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello. All were found within the same general location and found near where Shannan Gilbert had been reported missing. However, none of the women were identified as being Shannan Gilbert. All 4 of the women had worked in prostitution through Craigslist. All 4 were strangled. The women went missing from July 2007 through September 2010.
After these discoveries, police began expanding their search for more evidence. On March 30th, 2011, a 5th set of remains was found within 2 miles of the previous 4 sets of remains that had been found. 2 Months later in May 2011, police announced that this set of remains belonged to 20-year-old Jessica Taylor. She worked in prostitution and parts of her dismembered body had been found in 2003 in New York State, 45 miles away. She had gone missing from Manhattan in July 2003.
Five days later on April 4th, 2011, police discovered 3 more sets of remains. Like the previous set of remains, they were found within 2 miles of the four sets of remains found in December 2010. The first set of remains belonged to an unidentified female victim. The rest of her body had been found over 10 years ago in November 2000. She had been found near the remains that were found of Jessica Taylor back in 2003. The second set of remains belonged to an unidentified asian male. The third set of remains belonged to an unidentified female toddler who was believed to be 1-2 years old.
On April 11th, 2011 , it was announced that 1-2 more sets of remains had been identified. Little information has been released about these 2 sets of remains.
Based on the available evidence, it would appear that there may be at least 2 killers at work here. You can basically put the 10 sets of remains that have been found into 5 different groups.
Amber Lynn Costello
Jane Doe (Found April 4th, 2011)
Unidentified Asian Male (Found April 4th, 2011)
Unidentified Toddler (Found April 4th, 2011)
Two Unidentified Sets Of Remains Found On April 11th, 2011.
In group one, all 4 women worked in prostitution through craigslist. They all went missing within 3 years of each other, and they were all found close by. All 4 were strangled. In addition, if Shannan Gilbert was murdered (she is still missing), she would likely fall under group one.
In group two, both women were found within 2 miles of each other. Both women were dismembered and parts of their remains had also been found years prior (in 2000 and 2003). It should be noted that in June 2008, 39-year-old Tanya Rush was found dismembered in a small suitcase. She was found in New York State. Police are looking into the possibility of a connection to these 2 murders.
In group three, we have an unidentified asian male. Not much is known, except that he may have died a violent death. He may have been found close to the other victims, but that is the only similarity. This is why he is placed in a separate group.
In group four, we have an unidentified toddler. Like group three, the remains were found close to the other sets of remains, but that is the only similarity. Police have said publicly they believe whoever put that child there was NOT responsible for the other sets of remains.
Finally, in group five, we have two unidentified sets of remains. Little information is known about them, so that is why I put them in a separate group.
Based on the above groups, this could indicate at least 5 different killers that are responsible for the murders. For whatever reason, the long beach area may have been an attraction for killers, and a lot of the victims coincidentally ended up within a couple miles of each other. We also have to ask, if there are at least 5 different killers, how many other victims may have been murdered by these killers? How many families out there are still awaiting closure about their loved ones disappearances or their loved ones murder? Hopefully soon, we will all begin to get some answers.
